Stone of Fury, 3D LiDAR scanning, 3D simulation video, 2min 19 sec, 2023

“Stone of Fury” is a short 3D simulation video that visualises the invisible and unspoken aspect of the life and death through the bangsatap (evil expelling tower). The surreal, enigmatic shapes and movements of lava, smoke, fire, and ash activate as a ritualistic monument, transcending unspoken narratives. The bangsatap, meaning “protective tower,” were originally constructed by Jeju villagers to ward off malevolent spirits believed to inhabit the Jeju landscape. Built from stone, which was thought to harbour positive energies and bring good fortune, these towers function as a spiritual architecture. The real stone tower was 3D LiDAR scanned on-site and the movement of lava, smokes, fires, and ashes are 3D modelled and simulated. The 3D LiDAR scanning helps to embody the most realistic shape and the material without artificially model the object (stone tower) in 3D animation software program. This visual method blurred the lines between visible and invisible and material and immaterial.
